Caroline A McDermott
I'm a swim coach full-time for Piranha Aquatics--I'm proud I can now say that; I never thought that day would be here! I've been the head coach now for over 6 years (and I've been coaching for longer than I am willing to admit), and it really is a dream come true...Sometime I will write about that struggles and joys of that journey... Right now I'm just feeling fortunate that I have followed my passion and found success (at least my definition of success) doing it.
I teach private swim lessons, too, and I just really started focusing on working with persons with Autism teaching them to swim and getting them involved with our swim program.
I (also) teach and play piano, Crossfit, and enjoy a plethora of activities including art exploration (I sold a few photographs in an art show, even!) , kayaking, pistol shooting, brewing beer, reading (a lot!) and attempting to learn the guitar. I work on a few projects in my hometown including Race for the Roc and am on the board for the Creative Learning Center. At 18 I insisted I was moving away and never coming back...funny how life works out that way? Moving back to Salem to build my career was a really great choice for me. I had no idea this was the path my life would take but I couldn't imagine it any other way.
A few years ago I became a birthmother when I made the decision to make an adoption plan for my daughter, and I have found writing to be an outlet for the experience. I always needed something to write a memoir about, so I guess now I have a topic? I work with the adoption agency I used to plan and facilitate retreats for birthmothers; its a really helpful and healing process for me.
At home it's just me and my cat, Dunkel--I have a one human: one cat ratio rule; at least this way I won't become a crazy cat-lady (anytime soon, at least).
